- Emmrich and his sister Shadowheart are a famed pair of occultists, renowned for their apparent ability to commune with spirits and their attunement to the dead. In addition to performing as many illusions and magicians once did, they perform exorcisms and all manner of supernatural rites meant to do everything from setting spirits to rest to speaking with those who've passed on.

The Volkarin family has always traded in the occult in one way or another, and Emmrich and Shadowheart are just carrying on the family business, albeit while much more in the limelight than their parents ever dreamed.
Some say Emmrich was always interested in the supernatural, while others claim his interest only began with the birth of his sister, as intent as he was to know her as well and as closely as one knows one's own blood. The relationship has defined the rest of his life, from his stint as a stage magician and escapist while she went into the corporate world, to his return to the more explicitly occult upon her exit from it.
